The Will to Power One God Book 1 edition by Kata Mlek Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
DISCLAIMER The author provided me with a free copy of the book so that I could review it.
This novel is about the rise of Genesis, a bio-genetics company. While it could loosely be termed a techno-thriller, the focus is more on the politics and manipulations than the technology. The advances in creating genetically modified organisms are just assumed.
I did not like this book at all. If not for the fact that I was reviewing it, I would've stopped reading it well before the end. And even then I considered stopping on multiple occasions.
The narrative tends to jump around from character to character, with a short bit centering on one person followed by another bit focused on someone else. And while this is a valid writing technique, it took away much of the sense of suspense and continuity. It was just a bunch of self-contained vignettes. There wasn't a purpose or an overriding buildup to a climax. It just "was".
What really turned me off from this book, however, were the numerous adult situations—both sexual and violent. For instance
◘ The owner of a rival corporation opens a box containing the severed head of his son, who was kidnapped in an effort to get the man to sell his company at a low price.
◘ A woman has to show she's willing to perform oral sex on a random man in order to get a job with Genesis.
◘ Lots of sex and sexual situations, both gay and hetero.
◘ Lots of pedophilia.
◘ Lots of profanity.
Not recommended.
Polish Kata Mlek has written more than her share of polish books. And now she is breaking heavily into the English market with some action packed and well-developed storylines in the Will to power. One can not avoid but be connected to the characters and their journey. Despite the blazing intensity of the plot, she manages to have the time to develop fine-tuned, and psyhcologically deep characters. At the same time, Kata wrings the best philosophical questions out of the near future setting. Highly recommended on all grounds!
Industrial espionage, power struggles and genetically modified crops all wrapped in one story. The motivations of the company leaders were exposed as monstrous, selfish and totally believable. Ruthless business decisions to advance regardless of public safety, sustainability or morals. It all rings true, and made an amazing story that kept me captivated right to the end. Highly recommended!
This is well written book and almost fits into the horror genre, and almost reads like a headline. The plot is filled with things that could so easily happen. Twisted and dark, the players in the game are anything but reasonable. Lies, murder, and a bunch else as four people fight it out for control. And I find I can't go further without spoiling it.
I didn't have a clue about genetically modified organisms (GMOs) so I was a little bit lost to begin with. Now, that's not a negative for the book, only an observation of my ignorance on the subject.
This fast paced story was highly entertaining. There were a lot of characters, names, data, but the storytelling was very good, which allowed me to keep up. The main characters were complex and very well developed, growing in my mind as the book went on.
Good writing, interesting subject and well thought out plots makes this a 5*
4.5 stars
One of my favorite kinds of books to read, this science-based thriller pressed all my buttons. First, it featured corporate greed run amuck—I don’t know what could more define our present-day world. There were conspiracies galore, and sick, twisted people pulling all kinds of strings in the background looking to get over on us regular folk. Featuring GMOs, genetic farming, and other ripped-from-the headlines topics, this thriller couldn’t be timelier if it tried. It was a nice mix of conspiracy-thriller, psychological thriller and techno-thriller. And the overall pace was good.
