As one who remembers the effects of Hurricane Camille on Virginia--the sights and sounds of which were seared into the memory of a 3 year old living along the South River--this book provided the answers to many questions that I had over the years. We lived just miles from where the worse destruction was and I vividly remember riding through Massies Mill when we could get in to see family. This book was expertly written --not only from the personal aspect, but from the technical vantage as well, as the author presented the inner workings--the anatomy of a Hurricane. Above all this book presents the triumph of those who overcame the great tragedy that separates their lives into the before and after.

This story too place near where we live. It was a fascinating book.
This was required reading in my son's high school. I moved to Central Virginia in 2006 and had no idea the area south of us had been so effected by Hurricane Camille. I found the descriptions of the weather pattern and why the event was so hidden from the national weather service and the nation fascinating. My son and his classmates found it a little tedious. I thought it was great reading.
This is an excellent book that details the events of this weather phenomenon perfectly. My husband is from this area of Virginia and said that the author did a great job in describing the area. He remembers relatives talking about "the flood" and was thrilled to read about the science behind how the storm formed and why it destroyed so many homes. I found this book to be well written and very interesting. Because it is now out of print, it was pretty pricey but arrived quickly and in new condition. Highly recommended.
The author did a great job of telling all of the human interest stories, including an aftermath of what became of folks years later. After reading it , I toured parts of Nelson country just to get a feel for devastation. Hard to believe how bad the flooding was. I remember Agnes in 72, but since the this occurred in just a small part of the state it was largely forgotten.
Stefan Bechtel has done a wonderful job of bringing the reader back to 1969, and the personal accounts are very engaging. Each of the people involved is brought to life and fleshed out well enough that it's easy to find yourself truly caring how each is affected. Bechtel also does an admirable job of illustrating the science behind a hurricane, and his descriptions really bring the event to life. Hurricane Camille was an incredible event, and the author absolutely does it, and the people affected, justice.

However, as a certified weather geek I considered rating this book even lower than four stars. There are a number of errors contained in the book. The infamous "hurricane party" said to have been held at Richelieu Apartments in Pass Christian, MS -- which plays a central role in the book -- is now almost certainly thought to be untrue. It's also thought by most meteorologists that the legendary intensity of Hurricane Camille, originally thought to be nearly 200mph at landfall, is probably greatly overestimated.

Camille was certainly still a violent storm, and the details don't change or undermine the ordeals that the survivors and victims were put through, but the erroneous facts were somewhat off-putting. I decided on a four-star rating because, despite the questionable facts, the story is still fascinating and well-told. This book should appeal especially to weather geeks or anyone old enough to have lived through the terrible storm on the Gulf Coast or the mountains of Virginia.
Hurricane Camille, an unbelieveably powerful CAT 5 storm, came on shore via the Gulf of Mexico in August, 1969; but, as this book so powerfully describes, peoples' lives were forever changed from the deep south to the Mid-Atlantic states. Virginia, my home state, was deeply affected. I remember the mighty James River, rise to unimaginable height and width, flooding my family's business and seeing dead cattle, remnants of buildings, trees and other debris ride in the fast red current. For an 11 year old, it's a profound memory etched in my mind even to this day. Nelson County, a few counties west of where I lived, suffered greater losses which have never been, nor will be, recovered. Entire families were swept away in the middle of the night from a storm which they were ill-prepared to tackle. Camille had already killed many, but was considered "tamed" by the time the storm reached VA. One has to read this book to fully comprehend all the weather factors which came into play that one fateful night. Truly, it was the "perfect storm". The author does an outstanding job bringing the reader into the story. It's moving and deeply heartfelt. The real-life stories from the survivors will make your heart race. It's also a fast read and one that sticks in the reader's mind. The black and white photos are incredible and unforgettable.
Gives a riveting and detailed account of Hurricane Camille, from its formation over the ocean waters, the devastating effects on the Gulf Coast and finally, the utter destruction of communities in Nelson County, VA. I was only a child in a neighboring area when Camille came roaring through Virginia and remember seeing pictures and hearing accounts of entire families lost and and whose bodies never found. I have driven through Nelson County many times and one can still see the scars left on mountainsides where the water stripped soil off the peaks down to the bedrock. It gives harrowing first hand accounts by those fortunate ones who survived this heartbreaking ordeal. Easy to read and hard to put down. .A must read book for anyone interested in details of what horrific devastation the weather can wreak on humanity.
