I was looking for light reading and this fit the bill perfectly. The story takes place in England in modern times, and is about a young woman who gets let go from her job and starts a business called "The Little Lady Agency". She has a male best friend and housemate and another female friend from her past job. IN her business she accompanies single men to parties and special occasions that they are not comfortable attending single. She also helps men polish their manners and shop for clothing. Her father and her family put her down, except for her grandmother who is very supportive. I liked the fact that there was no foul language and no graphic sex. It is a book that anyone can read from 15 to 95.Tags : The Little Lady Agency and the Prince [Hester Browne] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. This is second time I’ve read this wonderful book. The only regret is I wish it was a little longer. Such a great main character!!
I've read most of Hester Browne's books and this one (and whole Little lady agency series) is my favorite. Very funny, very wise, you wouldn't want to stop reading.
The heroine in this story has unbelievably low self-esteem. Every sniveling action by her seems to be tied to some all-powerful man in her life. Whatever happened to women's lib? Her and her "best friend's" actions, thoughts and speech just grate on your nerves. Life for them is just a drudgery. The story overall might not have been too badly laid out IF ONLY the main character is more likable. There are much better chick lit books out there that are waaaaay more fun to read; ask for recommendations. I would not be reading the second book in the installation.
My sorrow at discovering I was on the last page of this book can only be compared to finding the Godiva chocolates consumed by a former friend. I know that many of the English aspects of the book do not translate well into American and feel fortunate to be an American raised in Hawaii living in Canada and thus able to put aside all former assumptions when reading this kind of fiction. Her horror of a family struck me as hilarious instead of co-dependent and vicious. It was such a relief to find Ms. Browne so aware of the absurdity of the central relationship of the series; the imbalance and dishonesty between the two characters seemed so farfetched. The author's insertion of the Prince angle was a classic recounting of the temptation of the fairytale ending. It was such a wonderfully English book, full of absurdity and wit, including the decaying family chapel redecorated by set designers for the christening! Thank you, Ms. Browne, and if you write more I will add them to my book collection next to the Austen, Angela Thirkell and Trollope.
I could not finish this book. It started out as an amusing read, began to become a bit tedious near the middle, finally just cououldn't take it any more. This author has been compared to Sopie Kinsella in other reviews. Superficially, perhaps, but not even close to the sparkling dialogue and quirky humor that are the trademarks of Kinsella. Now I'm sorry I wasted my time with this book. Can't even care one iota about this character and how the book turns out.
I really really like British books. I've read all the charming books by Miss Read, and all the books by Sophie Kinsella. I searched for a couple of months for some new chic-lit to read and tried a few that fell short of the expectations. Then I somehow came across Hester Browne. This book was so incredibly enjoyable. It was like reading the Shopaholic books but a tad better. And for me the most enjoyable part is that it was clean. It made for really enjoyable light reading.
I love this book and have re-read ita number of times. I know I'll re-read it again, too. I really like the character. She's kind, but no nonsense. What I really liked was seeing the heroine overcome challenges. Thea's some romance, but this is not a romance per se. The heroine has a full life, including friends and family. And it was funny. It's like curling up with your best friends, telling funny stories of "Guess what happened to me today?" I read all three Little Lady books, and love them
