All the King Cooks The Tudor Kitchens of King Henry VIII at Hampton Court Palace Peter Brears Brears 9780285635333 Books Reviews

A fantastic little book, it describes an often over looked piece of material culture the food of a time period, and means of cooking it. With the eye of a cook and an expert in kitchens Brears helps bring a time to life.
Having seen the kitchens at Hamptom Court, this book helped me have a more vivid picture of how complicated getting meals to the king & his entourage were. To me, it would have been a massive feat!!
Excellent, easy to read book anyone who loves to cook will find of interest. I learned more about the day to day life of "regular people" during Tudor times in this one book than the dozens I've read about that time period combined.
A wonderful book! Well written and well researched that's for sure. You really had to be organized to feed such a large amount of people. It also makes me wonder how on earth they managed to avoid food poisoning. Makes you appreciate the good old microwave and anything electronic. A very enjoyable read.
Amazingly researched. I am enjoying this cookbook very much. If I have any complaint, the version could use a bit of polish on the ingredients lists. The columns smush together and they odd combinations can be funny. (I am not docking them any stars because the cookbook is worth it.)
Don't go to England without reading this and be sure you do not miss the re-enactments/living historic recreations at the books scene. Worth every penny and minute spent, Just plain fun ...and for historians that is a tough nut to crack! But ,trust me...after being a Chef for forty years..Do Not Eat A Swan (regardless of what you read in this book)!!!!!! James Thelwell (the great British cartoonist) likened eating one to eating a fishy tasting felt boot liner....I concur and Her Majesty and the Chefs at Hampton Court are welcome to their swans!!!!
Love the book. I don't know how they didn't give a lot of people food-poisoning. I must be a map geek - I loved having the maps to see where the rooms were in relation to each other. It really was an interesting book to read. My wife even tried blowing up a chicken to roast it. Yes, blow up a chicken. You'll have to read the book to find out how and why. (They include some recipes adapted for modern tables rather than for 800 people.)
