Seth Gabriel is one messed up dude. He is divorced, a drunk, pays women for sex, hides from his landlord and is a crappy father. And, that's all in a day's work! But, things seem to be looking up after he meets Evan Gallagher and gives him a proposition that Seth cannot refuse. But, will it ultimately destroy Seth and push him over the edge?

I like books about ghosts, demons, witches, vampires, werewolves, fairies, etc. It makes me feel like a kid again to read about these characters, almost like I'm reading fairy tales when I was a kid. I really liked GoDP because Seth can see ghosts and talk to them but he doesn't believe in demons. Seriously!! Anyway, because Seth can communicate with the dead, it makes his life super complicated and ultimately ruins everything in his life. He has shitty relationship with his 12 year old son, he's getting a divorce, lives in a rundown trailer and drinks like a fish. He doesn't sustain any real relationships with people because he can't talk about what he does for a living for fear of what people will think. After meeting Evan Gallagher, a rich lawyer, he thinks that maybe he can turn his shitty life around and make something of himself. But what he doesn't realize is that he might just go nucking futs and never come back.

I cannot say enough about this book. I really and truly think that this is one of the best books of the year. I would really like to see this book soar to the top of the charts because I believe it is that good. There are so many aspects to this story that are heart-wrenching and have the reader hanging on every word. There are so many scenes where you can feel the character's pain, passion and loss. I really connected with these characters and found myself thinking about the dynamics of each one even when I wasn't reading. This isn't a feel good, make-me-feel-all-warm-and-fuzzy-inside story that you will be smiling about all day about. It's a dark, twisted, messed up tale about some dark, twisted, messed up characters. But, they are real. They have real problems; real stories and real heartbreak. They feel like real people, not characters in a story. If you read this book (and I highly recommend that you do), I really think that you will come to the same conclusions that I have. Matt has promised that this isn't the end of Seth and I really hope it's true.

Ghosts of Demons Past eBook Matt Schiariti Roy Mauritsen Alexis Arendt Lisa Metlak Reviews

In my opinion, Ghosts of Demons Past by Matt Schiariti has two major strikes against it. One, trying new authors is always risk, and one that is often met with disappointment, and two, the book is written in the first person. This combination is usually enough to keep me away from a book, but having enjoyed Mr. Schiariti's short Words With Fiends, I thought I'd give Demons a try, and I wasn't disappointed. The prose flows, and I found myself caring about the characters in the story. The first person narration was top rate, and added to the book, rather than take away from it. Mr. Schiariti manages to go from two strikes, to a home run.

Our main character, Seth, has issues. He is divorced, a lover of women and they of him. He chases ghosts for a living, which his ex-wife and others find to be below menial. As we learn about Seth and his life, Schiariti blends horror, humor, and some romance into a thoroughly enjoyable plot. Don't be put off by the language and adult situations at the beginning. Schiariti is just selling some oats, and things settle down as the narrative progresses.

I was impressed by the prose most of all. It is clear, tight, and pulls you through the story in a way that shows talent well beyond Mr. Schiariti's experience as a writer. New writers invariably make certain mistakes over description, picking the wrong high points of the story, choosing to leave the reader guessing because they don't have an ending of their own, or often, not even a story. Mr. Schiariti is guilty of to much exposition at points, and maybe he leans a little too much on slang and casual conversations, but these are VERY small items. Mr. Schiariti has talent. That is apparent. And I look forward to seeing what he does with it in the future. Well done first novel that I can recommend without hesitation.
This in an incredible story! I finished the entire thing in just under 24 hours because I couldn’t put it down. Mr. Schiariti weaves a wonderful tale that pulls the reader in and holds them there. I was blown away by the descriptive imagery, range of emotion and the depth of the very three-dimensional characters. Seth Gabriel is the kind of reluctant hero that is charming and likable, despite being…well… kind of a mess, both literally and figuratively. Each and every other character, from the weird thug boss to the Greek restaurant owner to Seth’s own family, were all unique, well thought-out and completely believable. It was easy to picture the entire book as a movie playing in my mind, one which kept me glued to the edge of my seat. I’m happy to join in the chorus of, “Bring us more Seth now! We demand it.”

The only unfortunate thing is that I am forced to only rate this book 5 platypires. I wish there were an option for more of them. ;)
